Quo vadis, Venecia

ONLY the stupidly naïve or naively stupid will believe that the sending of the Pulido impeachment complaint to the justice committee of the House and its expected death thereafter has happily ended the Arroyo-De Venecia stalemate. And that peace will reign between the two allies henceforth, all recriminations and doubts totally erased like some bad dream.

The truth is, most Filipinos who are following the unfolding of events since Joey de Venecia III first blew the whistle on the NBN-ZTE deal know it is just a matter of time before the execution of the incumbent House Speaker by the Brutuses of the House occurs. “In November or December”, an unnamed ranking House official was quoted as saying in a national daily on the countdown on the fate of the man they call JDV.

Of course, the ever sly poker player in De Venecia won’t be caught dead acknowledging there’s even a whiff of a chance of a disruption in his rule at the House. That would be uncharacteristsic of him. He’d exude outward confidence till the very last – before the hordes actually come to break down the door. In fact, he strongly said the other day the House ruling coalition is intact – typical bluster from a master-politician

Alas, the very source of confidence of JDV, the support of his so-called “allies” in the House may yet become his source of perdition. Nothing perhaps brought this realization   so clearly to him than when the 180-plus congressmen – many of whom he counted as his “men” – showed up at the Malacanang Palace on President Arroyo’s bidding, happily receiving their manna like kids who just did good in school. That showed beyond doubt who’s got the numbers if things ever came to a direct confrontation with La Presidenta.

So, what is left for JDV to do now?

‘Tis not for him to reason why; ‘tis but to do or die.
