The seeds of good are growing

PAMPANGA. Isabela. General Santos. Taysan town in Batangas.
Remember these places because they are where the seeds of freshly found sanity have been planted in the last election. In these places, geographically set apart from each other, people still have their hearts and minds in the right place –i.e, in the good and the noble and the true. They were neither lured by gold, seduced neither by glitter (of celebrity status) nor intimidated by goons.
In a landscape now reeking with deceit, greed and lies, it is always good to hear of people going for symbols of old-fashioned honesty and sincerity, bucking the odds and winning as in the election victories of priest Ed Panlilio in Pampanga, Grace Padaca in Isabela and Darlene Antonino-Custodio in General Santos – or losing, with dignity and courage as those two poll workers in Taysan, Batangas, including a teacher, who were burned to death inside the schoolbuilding where vote-canvassing was going on, set ablaze by forces so wicked and evil mere hanging would be so kind a punishment for them.
These places are sending out a strong message to the rest of the indifferent parts of the archipelago that there must and should be an end to compromising principles, to seeking personal gratification and indeed to blind party loyalty and political herd mentalities.
Over the past weeks after the election, more and more true acts of heroism and daring have surfaced in the southern part of the country, particularly in the Mindanao provinces. As wholesale instances of election irregularities unravel there, our Muslim brothers and sisters have found their wits and courage about them to denounce the wholesale election fraud being committed under the very noses, in fact, possibly under the direction of Christian North officials and operators descending on their areas. All their acts of courage, it must be stressed, are at great and present risks to their lives and that of their families.
Not everything is lost in our side of the Pacific. There are still a few good men and women over here, bless this country’s soul. It is now up to you who watch from the sidelines to make their ranks grow.
