Messing with election sked could be fatal

WHO’S AFRAID of elections? The administration guys at the House of Representatives may have all the best intentions in the world for economic and political reforms in our system, they may even actually believe in the loftiness of their position with the burning faith of the early age Crusaders. But their move to postpone the elections (or scrap it altogether later when there’s an interim parliament already in place, as many in the opposition surmise they will do) as embodied in the transitory provisions of the amendments they plan to carry out just spoils everything – for them.
Everyone in this archipelago (perhaps except their honorables and their lackeys) is itching for an election as scheduled in May next year. We’ve even heard one young aspirant for the third congressional district seat of Pangasinan say that only the incumbents want the polls postponed or scrapped altogether for obvious reasons. And having said that, he served notice he’ll make a go of it once this question of Charter change and the resetting of elections is resolved or done away with.
The ordinary Juan and Petra in the street wants it. Government functionaries (the politically unattached ones, we must distinguish here), want it, if only to get a chance to have a new big boss at the central office who will (hopefully) be better than the present one. The military might even want it (no matter how buttoned up their lips may be on it) so the ascendancy of demonstrably inefficient and corrupt superiors could be checked somehow.
In short, to delay or prevent the wishes of a clear majority of the people of this archipelago is to court disaster, the wrath of the multitude who see in the vote – correctly or wrongly – the solution to all their present woes or discomfort.
Whoever fed or nurtured the idea that in this Cha-cha script, the regular mid-term election has to be postponed, certainly has a fatal misreading of the Filipino mind.and attitude. Now, the whole boiling pot will have to be thrown overboard — or its brewers risk being scalded, really nastily scalded.
Ah, here’s the classic case of too many cooks spoiling the broth .
