Religious leader courting Islamic fatwa

Dating Daan’s  Bro. Eli Soriano now seems to take on everyone in the name of his faith. Not contented with crossing swords with the big Iglesia Ni Cristo sect where he had his roots in evangelical work, the man’s latest foray into religious war threatens to start a fatwa in a way after he publicly took potshots at the Muslim religion and way of life. Shades of author Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses.

The rage of the world Muslim community displayed over news cartoons in Denmark defaming prophet Mohamed should not be carried to the Philippines. The concerned network where Soriano aired his anti-Muslim remarks and Soriano himself should be cautioned by the NTC before they become a flashpoint for religious protests and conflict, aside from creating a negative image for the country.

There are times when punditry in faith takes a very long, winding and dangerous road. Though we might respect the ADD head’s opinions in the name of religious freedom, this time we guess, he has gone too far – putting the national interest itself, not to mention himself, in clear and present danger.

Soriano’s raging battle with the INC of Ka Erdie Manalo is bitter as it is, leaving a bad taste in the mouth for all who detest seeing apostles of spiritualism engaged in a war of attrition of sorts. But with this his ridiculing the revered symbol of  world Islamic faith, he could spark a “fight”  the dimensions of which he might never have imagined.
He can probably ask Rushdie how it is.
